Starman on his way to Mars...

Starman on his way to Mars...

You probably watched the live feed, or heard of it right after it happened on February 6th: Space X tested its new (and much bigger) reusable Falcon Heavy rocket. Wow, that was cool!

In case you missed it, or you have no idea what I am talking about, have a quick look...

This is an animation showing how Space X has planned it...

And that's the recording of the launch live feed...

I found the launch itself already quite astonishing. Bet then seeing those two boosters returning to earth and landing in perfect synchronisation. Hearing all those Space X employees cheering in the background, feeling their excitement after years of extremely hard work... I was truly amazed! These guys do real rocket science! And I think they really rock! Very well done Space X team!

But launching a rocket is not what captivated the masses around the planet, it's the long term vision behind it. The goal, set out by Space X founder Elon Musk, to turn humanity into a multi-planetary species. Starting a self-sufficient colony on Mars to ensure that human life will survive on the long term, whatever happens on Earth... Sounds like science fiction in a world that seemed to have lost all sense of commonality, shared goals and values, and that we are all sitting in this little boat called "Earth" together... But it's real, and Space X is highly committed to get it done.

The successful launch of this new rocket type was yet another step on that long journey towards Mars and I was thrilled to see that they succeeded! Even though it was just a test flight, the rocket was not entirely empty when it headed upwards, in fact it carried very precious freight to be delivered into orbit...

Starman, dressed in a futuristic Space X prototype space suite intended for future Mars missions, was released to space in Elon Musk's very own red Tesla roadster. Send off to his long journey to Mars, set free to the song "Life on Mars?" by David Bowie... :-)

Let's wish him good luck on his journey to Mars, or wherever he might end up. And just in case you are curious where Starman is cruising around right now - there is a website tracking him...
